Skrillex - Leaving EP: A Review of the 2013 Release

Skrillex - Leaving EP: A Review of the 2013 Release

Skrillex, the Grammy-winning electronic music producer and DJ, surprised his fans in January 2013 with a new EP titled Leaving. The EP was released exclusively to members of The Nest, a subscription service run by his label OWSLA, and featured three tracks: The Reason, Scary Bolly Dub, and Leaving.

The Reason is a catchy and upbeat track that showcases Skrillex's signature sound of distorted bass, chopped vocals, and glitchy synths. The track has been getting significant radio play in Australia, mostly on Triple J, a youth radio station[^2^]. Skrillex said that he made the track "on a laptop in a hotel room in Mexico" and that it was "inspired by all the amazing music I heard on this last tour".

Scary Bolly Dub is a darker and heavier track that mixes elements of dubstep, trap, and electro. The track is a rework of an older Skrillex song called Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites, which was released in 2010 and became one of his most popular hits. Skrillex said that he used Scary Bolly Dub "more as a DJ tool" but wanted to share it with his fans[^2^]. The track was also featured in a mix by Caspa, a British dubstep producer and DJ[^3^].

Leaving is a more experimental and emotional track that explores a different side of Skrillex's musical range. The track features a minimalistic piano melody, ambient noises, and a distorted vocal sample that repeats the phrase "I don't wanna leave you". Skrillex said that he made the track "in my hotel room at 6am" and that it was "inspired by my friends and the times we shared together" [^1^].

Skrillex - Leaving EP is a short but diverse collection of songs that demonstrate Skrillex's versatility and creativity as an artist. The EP received positive reviews from critics and fans alike, who praised Skrillex for his originality and innovation. The EP also showed Skrillex's willingness to experiment with new sounds and styles, while staying true to his roots.

The EP received mostly positive reviews from critics and fans alike, who praised Skrillex for his originality and innovation. Erik Burg of Consequence of Sound gave the EP a B+ rating and wrote that "Leaving is a testament to Skrillexâs ability to constantly evolve and challenge himself as a musician". He also noted that "the EP showcases a more mature and refined sound from the dubstep kingpin". [^1^]

Robert Christgau of MSN Music gave the EP an A- rating and described it as "three strikingly different tracks that add up to 12 minutes and 41 seconds of avant-electronica at its most pop-friendly and least pretentious". He also praised Skrillex for his "melodic gift" and "sonic ingenuity". [^3^]

Will Hermes of Rolling Stone gave the EP three out of five stars and wrote that "Skrillex's latest finds him refining his ear-grabbing, head-spinning sound". He also commented that "the EP suggests new possibilities for EDM's reigning prince".

However, not all reviews were positive. Nicole Ruggiero of Exclaim! gave the EP a 6 out of 10 rating and wrote that "Leaving is a decent effort, but it doesn't showcase anything groundbreaking or particularly memorable from Skrillex". She also criticized the EP for being "too short" and "lacking cohesion". [^2^]
