Harry Potter Book 1: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Summary of the book

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is the first book in the series. It introduces us to Harry Potter, an eleven-year-old boy who lives with his abusive relatives, the Dursleys, in a cupboard under the stairs. He has no idea he is a wizard until he receives a letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, inviting him to join its ranks. He soon learns that he is famous in the wizarding world as the Boy Who Lived, the only survivor of an attack by Lord Voldemort, a dark wizard who killed his parents when he was a baby.

At Hogwarts, Harry makes friends with Ron Weasley, a boy from a large and poor wizarding family, and Hermione Granger, a girl who is very smart and studious. He also makes enemies with Draco Malfoy, a boy from a wealthy and arrogant wizarding family, and Professor Snape, a teacher who seems to hate him for no reason. He also meets Professor Dumbledore, the wise and powerful headmaster of Hogwarts; Professor McGonagall, the strict but fair deputy headmistress; Professor Quirrell, the nervous Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher; Hagrid, the friendly half-giant gamekeeper; and many other characters who will play important roles in his life.

Harry Potter Book 2: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Summary of the book

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is the second book in the series. It follows Harry's second year at Hogwarts, where he faces a new threat: a mysterious voice that only he can hear, and a series of attacks on students and staff who are Muggle-born (born to non-magical parents). Harry learns that there is a hidden chamber in the school, called the Chamber of Secrets, that was created by one of the founders of Hogwarts, Salazar Slytherin. Slytherin was known for his hatred of Muggle-borns and his desire to purge them from the school. He also left behind a monster that can only be controlled by his heir, who is believed to be among the current students.

Harry becomes a suspect in the attacks, as he is able to speak Parseltongue, the language of snakes, which is a rare and dark ability. He also receives a warning from Dobby, a house-elf who tries to prevent him from returning to Hogwarts. He also faces other challenges, such as dealing with Gilderoy Lockhart, a new and incompetent Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher who is obsessed with his own fame; competing in a dueling club with Draco Malfoy; flying a car to school with Ron Weasley; and rescuing Ginny Weasley, Ron's younger sister, who has been taken into the chamber by the heir of Slytherin.

Harry discovers that the heir of Slytherin is none other than Tom Riddle, a former student of Hogwarts who later became Lord Voldemort. Riddle had preserved his memory and soul in a diary, which he gave to Ginny Weasley. He used Ginny to open the chamber and unleash the monster, a giant basilisk, which can kill anyone who looks into its eyes. Harry manages to destroy the diary and free Ginny with the help of Fawkes, Dumbledore's phoenix; and the Sword of Gryffindor, one of the relics of another founder of Hogwarts, Godric Gryffindor.

Harry Potter Book 3: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Summary of the book

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is the third book in the series. It follows Harry's third year at Hogwarts, where he faces a new danger: Sirius Black, a notorious criminal who escaped from Azkaban, the wizarding prison. Black is believed to be a loyal follower of Lord Voldemort, and to have betrayed Harry's parents to him. He is also believed to be after Harry, as he is the only one who can stop him from returning to Voldemort's side.

Harry learns that Sirius Black is his godfather, and that he was framed by Peter Pettigrew, another friend of his parents who was thought to be dead. Pettigrew was actually the one who betrayed Harry's parents, and then faked his own death by turning into a rat and hiding as Ron Weasley's pet, Scabbers. He also learns that Sirius Black and Remus Lupin, the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, are both werewolves, and that they were part of a group of friends with Harry's father, James Potter. The group was known as the Marauders, and they created a magical map of Hogwarts, called the Marauder's Map, which shows the location of everyone in the school.

Harry, Ron, and Hermione use the Marauder's Map and a time-turner, a device that allows them to travel back in time, to help Sirius Black and Remus Lupin escape from the Dementors, the soul-sucking guards of Azkaban who have been sent to capture Black. They also manage to expose Peter Pettigrew and save Buckbeak, a hippogriff (a creature with the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a horse) who was sentenced to death for attacking Draco Malfoy.

The Ministry appoints Dolores Umbridge, a cruel and tyrannical witch, as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher and High Inquisitor of Hogwarts. She imposes strict rules and punishments on the students and staff, and prevents them from learning any practical magic.

Harry also learns that he has a connection with Voldemort's mind, which allows him to see some of his thoughts and actions. He also has disturbing dreams about a mysterious door in the Department of Mysteries, where he believes Voldemort is hiding something important. He also forms a secret group of students, called Dumbledore's Army, who meet in a hidden room called the Room of Requirement, to practice defensive magic under his guidance.

Harry also faces other problems, such as dealing with his feelings for Cho Chang, a girl he likes; coping with the loss of his godfather, Sirius Black, who was killed by Voldemort's followers in a battle at the Ministry; and discovering the truth about his destiny and his role in the prophecy that links him to Voldemort.
